This clinical research network was created to coordinate and facilitate diabetes research across Scotland. It provides support to academic researchers in study development and practical research methodology training for research teams. SDRN also coordinates commercial research contracts at hospitals and GP sites across Scotland. There is also an Epidemiological studies group which aims to expand national diabetes research using SCI-DC and other linked databases.
Aims and objectives
1. To facilitate unintrusive epidemiological research using SCI-DC and other national databases.
2. To increase the number of patients in both commercial and non-commercial studies.
3. To support an increase in diabetes research activity across Scotland.
SDRN has a portfolio of 90 studies registered on their database and an audit of diabetes research showed more than 15000 participants in diabetes trials ( patients and controls ) . Commercial contacts are in progress with most major pharma companies. The first epidemiological study is also underway.
SDRN aims to facilitate a significant increase in diabetes research activity, both commercial and non-commercial, through support for academic researchers in protocol and study development and training for study teams to ensure that all research is conducted to the highest standards.
The SDRN Executive group comprises Prof Rory McCrimmon, Prof John Petrie , Dr Robert Lindsay, Prof Donald Pearson, Prof John McKnight, Prof Frank Sullivan & Dr Alistair Emslie- Smith.
